USED Urban Steel Bikes

Allegro Custom Single-Speed Bikes and more...

USED Urban Steel Bikes

There was a big focus on Singlespeed and Fixed Gear Bikes at the Bike Shows in Friedrichshafen, Cologne, London and Vegas. USED was there and showing the new USED STEEL BIKE range. The sound of visitors smacking their lips and grabbing for the DigiCam was something we got USED to on the stand. The response was overwhelming.

The interest could be divided into two seperate camps. One group is interested in "retro" and bike culture and wants everything to be very authentic, while the second group is discovering Singlespeed as a way of moving through the city fast and comfortable and cares less for bike-protokol. With our USED STEEL BIKES we have something for both parties, beautiful lugged frame bikes for the Track or the Tour, but also the perfect Urban bike that is practical, multifunctional and stylish. With both types of bikes we chose function over the coolnessfactor.

We got a lot of questions about the abundance of Fixed Gear and Singlespeed bikes. Our opinion can be summed up with something Richard Ayling said about our bike range: "The difference between our bikes and some of the others offering similar bikes, can be compared to music: There's Punkrock and Jazz. It's all music, but the beat, the passion and the groove can be different, not right or wrong, just different. We are not Punkrockers, we are not building bikes for heroes, we're just playing jazz and if you catch our groove then feel free. There are a lot of grooves out there.”

The Singlespeed USED URBAN STEEL BIKES are a cooperation between Allegro Bikes from Melbourne, Australia and USED. Richard Ayling, Allegro founder, Track rider and Cycling coach (for people like Cadel Evans, Stuart O‘Grady and Robbie McEwan in their junior days) has done a great job on the specifications of these bikes. He was able to melt beauty and function with zeitgeist and attitude. These are bikes for a different world.

The bikes have been made using the new Allegro Custom Tubing in double-butted Chrom-Moly-Steel. This material gives the frames stabilty and the flex steel riders have learned to appreciate.

The USED URBAN STEEL BIKE Line is Urban Mobility pure, which is what USED has been preaching for a while now. We are getting our team together, good dedicated dealers, that understand our philosophy and culture, with whom we can grow and prosper. Watch out we're coming!

Interview with Richard Ayling from Allegro

posted by bob on 15. september 2008

part one Richard ayling interview

Here's a two-part interview that i did with Richard Ayling, when he came to visit me after the Eurobike Show in Quakenbrück. Richard is the owner of Allegro Bikes in Melbourne Australia. USED and Allegro have signed an agreement to build and distribute a line of Singlespeed Urban Bikes. The bikes will come out in Europe under the name USED and in Australia under Allegro. Richard has done a great job with the specs and the bikes are really cool. They are fast, tough and a lot of fun to ride and they will carry a lot of stuff as well. Richard is an ex-track racer and trainer and has worked with people like Cadal Evans, Robbie McEwan and Stuart Grady on the track. He also worked for Cannondale for a long time before setting up distribution for Ortlieb, Basso and Tubus in Australia. In this interview Richard explains about Global Cooperation and what each of the bikes can do.

In part two of the interview below you can also hear a Aussie folk tune, played by Richard on his mandolin, which is his trusty companion on those long trips away from home. Richard is a great guy, friendly, knowledgeable and a feast of information about biking in general and singlespeeders in particular. The track frame was a big hit at both Eurobike and IFMA this year. I hope we can make the video quality better next time, but it gives you a good insight into what the new range is about. A catalogue will be ready soon.

USED going Down-Under on a Single Speed

Richard Ayling and Bob Giddens met in 2007 at an Ortlieb-Party during Eurobike. Now they have agreed to a global collaboration in which Richard's Allegro Brand and USED will produce the same bikes for two different markets. Allegro's home is Melbourne, Australia, where Single-Speed and Track bikes are very popular among Aussie-Urbanites. USED will issue the same bikes and more under their own logo. "Together we have some beautiful bikes that will turn some heads, both here and down under" said Bob Giddens, recently in Taiwan. Richard, who also imports Basso and Ortlieb into Australia, is pleased to have a partner that can consolidate some of the production and to promote both brands in the world. A lot of bikes get made in Taiwan and then transported to either Europe or the USA or Australia. These bikes will go both ways, making Taiwan the perfect base for global collaboration .... more.
